The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities near Tahrir Square in Cairo contains the world's richest collection of objects from ancient Egypt, constantly growing because the museum is the main recipient of all finds on Egyptian soil. The neoclassical building designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon, was inaugurated in 1902 to house the original collection, which until then was in the Boulaq Museum (1878), and which in 1890 had been moved to the Giza Palace of the Pasha Ismail. The collection exceeds the building's capacity to exhibit it properly, and the urgent construction of a new museum is planned. The samples are displayed in two symmetrical floors around central atrium. Many stone objects are displayed in the spacious front courtyard, where the magnificent tomb in the shape of the ancient sarcophagus of the Bajá Mariette rises, which laid the foundations of the Department of Antiquities of Egypt and created a state collection of antiquities. The tendency to encourage the creation of regional museums specialized in the findings of the surrounding areas (Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Elephantine) will reduce the influence of objects to the museum in Cairo
